[Op-Ed] FF7 Remake Part Two Might Look Something Like This – You Thought Part One Was Thirsty?
Temple of the Ancients
We’re building up to something here, and the search for Sephiroth has become a search for materia and the Promised Land of the Cetra. Shinra and Sephiroth are after it too. This takes us to the much more likely conclusion of Part Two. When you arrive, chasing Cait Sith who betrayed you at Gold Saucer, you find Shinra already here and a great dungeon that ends with Sephiroth threatening to summon meteor and destroy the world.
Aerith and the team now know where the Forgotten Capital is and it’s a race to get there ahead of Sephiroth and summon Holy to stop Meteor. Final dungeon as we discover the remains of the Cetra’s hidden world. This kind of high stakes ending is the likely point that Square Enix will push to with Part Two. Sephiroth and the Arbiters of Fate threatened all this at the end of Part One, but with the defeat of the Arbiters, we know that the Remakes can rewrite the story of Part Two to their heart’s content.
If what we all know happens to Aerith here still happens, then it would make a lot of sense to end the story here. If this wasn’t the end, but a point in the middle of Part Three for example, it means you’ve built Aerith up as a party member, only to lose her and have to continue, messing with the balance. Plus ending on a tragedy marks this out like The Empire Strikes Back, the dark mid-point in the trilogy, where the villains seem to be winning.
Conversely, with the possibilities of the new timeline, and the defeat of the Arbiters of Fate, it’s possible for this pivotal scene to be very different. Could Aerith in fact live? That is amazing consideration for the hype machine around Part Two. Even long-time fans and experts do not know what will happen, which makes every new part of this game fresh and unexpected even for those who have played the original dozens of times. Will she actually survive? Aerith’s death or her survival will be the bombshell moment that ends Part Two.
