Fluid animations, Kameo Fighters and more gore than you can shake a fist at. Check out the Mortal Kombat 1 trailer here.

With Street Fighter 6 already out this year, Tekken 8 primed for a release relatively soon and Mortal Kombat 1 arriving in just a couple of months, this year will be a feast for fighting game fans. NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games have upped the hype just that extra notch, thanks to a new gameplay trailer showing some klassic MK fisticuffs and a couple of new mechanics to sink our palms into.

Finish Him… And Them Too

Let’s start with the biggest change – the Kameo system. During combo-melting duels, you’ll be able to call in aid from a roster of characters, all of whom shown here are returning favourites. Each Kameo Fighter can perform offensive and support moves, breakers, fatal blows and even fatalities. NetherRealm have a history of glorious dynamic interactions between fighters, only now it will be with bursting guts and showers of bone-destroying gore.

While this isn’t revolutionary by any means, it’ll add another tactical layer to the kombat cocktail going on, particularly in online match-ups.

Set after the events of Mortal Kombat 11, Mortal Kombat 1 follows the story of Liu Kang’s ushering in of a new era for peace now that he’s in control of time itself. MK11’s story was a wild ride, if you hadn’t already realised. Mileena, Kitana, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage and Kenshi Takahashi (missing in MK11) all appear to be confirmed playable fighters once again.

Each character is embarking on their own journey in this new era of violent carnage, so the story will be quite the deviation from what we’ve come to expect in the past. Sonya, Kano, Goro, Stryker, and Jax were also shown, though only as Kameo fighters, unfortunately. Justice for Styker and all that.

Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled to launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store) on the 19th of September 2023. All Mortal Kombat 1 pre-orders will receive Shang Tsung as an in-game playable character, and those who pre-order the game for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S will also receive access to the Mortal Kombat 1 Pre-Order Beta, which will be available in August 2023.

Oh, and you can listen to or download the trailer’s original music track “Fatal” by ZHU: https://go.wbgames.com/MK1-ZHU-Fatal, if you’re so inclined.

Only three months to go until we’ll be yelling “FINISH HIM” at our friends as we sever them in half with an ice spear. Good times.
