Metal Gear Solid π«: Snake Eater – Which Version Are You Getting?
With a month to go until one of this year’s most hyped games, Metal Gear Solid π« on August 28th, the excitement is high. It’d be fair to say that at least half of the team at Finger Guns HQ is looking forward to it, and rightly so, as it’s arguably both the best Metal Gear Solid and the best choice for a remake. If you’re a fan of the series, you don’t need me to tell you why. If you’re unsure as to what Metal Gear Solid (the series) brings to the table, catch up on Miles’ review of the Master Collection Vol. 1 here.
But the real, burning question is: which version are you going to get? And I don’t mean physical versus digital, although the former is always the best version in the eyes of gaming preservation. No, I mean are you going Standard, Deluxe or Collector’s Edition? Have a look at the latest trailer first, and then we’ll break down the versions available.
The Standard Physical/Digital Version
Now, this one’s pretty obvious. It’s the base, complete game in all its glory. In regards to any extra content, it comes with a spiffing tuxedo for Snake to don as a pre-order bonus. There isn’t really much more to say about it, it’s the standard version of the game.
The Deluxe Edition

Okay, now we’re getting into the spicier versions. The Deluxe Edition features both the standard cased game, as well as a steelbook featuring the original Japanese box art design by Yoji Shinkawa. There’s also a nifty little Fox unit iron-on patch, the unit made by Major Zero that became a precursor to the Foxhound unit, and XOF from the Ground Zeroes/Phantom Pain continuations. It also comes with some artcards, and the classic alert exclamation mark keychain.
In regards to in-game content, as well as the aforemention tuxedo, it also comes with the Sneaking DLC pack. Featuring a varied selection of camouflage options for Snake (and a solid gold one, weirdly), it also allows early access to the game two days early. I’m not a fan of the whole “pay extra to play early” model, but I do like a nice Deluxe Edition. Here’s the lowdown on the Sneaking DLC pack:

The Collector’s Edition

Now, this is the big one. The Shagohod of physical editions. The version that makes you go, “Ooh, I’ve never wanted to spend so much money on a game that originally came out twenty-odd years ago” before,,,
Okay, slight exaggeration, but that is definitely going to be a collectible version to talk about. It comes with everything featured in the Deluxe Edition, and then some. Housed in the large box is a bust of Snake, intertwined with a snake (obviously), whilst the base pays homage to a late-game boss fight. I won’t spoil it, but I’m sure the keen-eyed can spot which one.
It also comes with a soundtrack LP featuring rerecorded English and Japanese versions of the seminal Snake Eater theme. You know the one, it’s already in your head. However, there is a catch with this gorgeous version.
For one, it’s a whopping Β£300 over here, but that’s not the worst bit. The sucky bit is that it’s only available to order through GAME, here. Now, I’m not suggesting that you don’t, but what with the current state of GAME and the varying reports of not following recent game preorders, I would exercise some caution.
So there we are: four versions (including digital) of the up and coming remake of the beginnings of Metal Gear Solid. As I say, there’s a few of us that are excited. Featuring a fully rebuilt game, as well as a host of extras, secrets and the return of Snake vs. Monkey, Metal Gear Solid Ξ: Snake Eater is going to be huge. It releases literally one month from today, so get those orders in if you want to secure a copy of launch day. Let us know below which one you’re getting, and what you’re most looking forward to in the remake.
