One To Watch – Showa American Story
I have to admit – this passed me by completely when announced a few years back. With a brand new ambitious trailer, we think Showa American Story is suddenly up there in the most exciting prospects on the gaming horizon. The industry needs raw visceral new stories, brave new IPs and visions unclouded by corporations and shareholders.
Showa American Story is an alternate present/past tale, presenting a bold vision to gamers – Japan’s economic bubble never burst and instead it sought to buy vast swathes of the USA, a kind of enforced cultural colonization in the opposite direction to our own world where everything is American-influenced. Into this strange world we advance past a zombie apocalypse in the 80s, preserving the Showa America in a perpetual 1980s, and into an alternate future where law and order and even crime itself barely have any meaning. It’s a high-octane action title, with more than passing influences from Dead Rising, Metal Gear Solid and the Yakuza series, as well as combat-heavy action titles like Wet, Wanted:Dead, or Lollipop Chainsaw. It really has to be seen to be believed. Check out the brand-new trailer below, and if you make it back, let’s discuss.
What did I just watch? The president has been watching anime! It’s like some kind of zombie, Kojima, Tarantino, city-pop love child. It’s Mad Max by way of Japan. I can’t quite believe it. We’ve got juxtapositions of American and Japanese culture, we’ve got harikiri in sight of Rushmore, we’ve got a cross-country road movie, we’ve got splattering gore and violence, and we’ve got five glorious minutes of it. It’s one of those trailers from two decades ago that we just don’t get anymore.
From the Press Release –
Take a trip through a surreal 1980’s America (Showa era 66) where the Japanese economic bubble never popped and the country used their substantial wealth to buy the majority of the land in the United States, now overtaken with Japanese culture and influences. 19-year old stuntwoman Chouko and her sister travel to Hollywood to audition for roles in a new movie but are sidetracked when they’re attacked by assassins and Chouko is dumped in the desert, left for dead. When she awakens the country is very…different. Zombies roam the streets and criminals terrorize the population. What happened?!
A Post-Apocalyptic Romance RPG Alternate History Period Drama
The vision isn’t quite so clear, but there’s plenty more gameplay to be seen in the announcement trailer from 2022
