18 Indie Games To Get Excited About in August 2026

Indie Games August 2026

We’re about to enter that exhausting part of the year, the same as every year, where there are so many block buster releases hitting the market that it’s almost impossible for smaller developers to get a share of the limelight. With that in mind, I thought it was time to brush off a Finger Guns staple of the past – the classic indie game list. While we’re soon to be awash with multi-million dollar production values, we thought we’d highlight some of the indie games coming out during August with a little more heart. Without further ado, here are 18 indie games to get excited about in August 2026.

Big Walk by House House – August 4th, 2026 – PC, Switch 2 and PS5

From the makers of Untitled Goose game, Big Walk is a cooperative multiplayer adventure about teamwork and talking, being coined as a “walker-talker”. These types of social exploration and collaboration games are the real flavour of the moment in indie gaming, but Big Walk looks to be the most complete and appealing. In the game, you’re free to explore an open world without direction, and you’re free to do as you will. Whether that’s just chilling out and chatting, going on a hike to see what you can see, or seeking out puzzles that put teamwork at their core, Big Walk accommodates it all. Big Walk is launching on Mac, PC via Steam, PS5 and Switch 2 on August 4th, 2026.

Akatori by Contrast Games – August 2026 – PC, Xbox and PlayStation

Metroidvania’s are an indie gaming staple, with the likes of Dead Cells, Hollow Knight and Blasphemous all managing to competing for GOTY awards, having started from humble beginnings. Akatori is the latest in the genre to attempt the same. Far more colourful that many of its peers, with a gorgeous pixel art style, this metroidvania puts you in the nimble shoes of Mako who’s attempting to stop the Amber Storms that are poisoning the world. Previews for Akatori were positive, so this is certainly one to look out for when it launches on PC via Steam and consoles in August.

ReStory: Chill Electronics Repairs by Mandragora – August 6th, 2026 – PC

Looking back, the 1990s to early 2000’s were a a real highpoint in hardware design. ReStory: Chill Electronics Repairs from Mandragora looks like a nostalgic way to revisit some of these designs and stroll down memory lane. In the game, you run a quaint electronics shop in Japan where you’ll be tasked with repairing and restoring close-but-not-close-enough-to-trigger-a-lawsuit versions of real world electronics. Cleaning down a dirty PSP. Fixing a broken NGage screen. Opening up a PSOne and figuring out what’s going wrong. It looks incredibly satisfying. While you’re doing so, you’ll be expanding your business in order to drum up more hardware to tinker with. ReStory: Chill Electronics Repairs is launching on PC via Steam on August 6th, 2026.

Echobreaker by Upstream Arcade – August 6th, 2026 – PC

‘Gotta go fast’ might be the catchphrase of a different video game icon, but it’s one that’s apt to use about the upcoming speed running game Echobreaker. Imagine Trackmania, but as an isometric shooter, and you’ll get the idea here. You’ll tackle levels attempting to set the best times, but with multiple paths to take, you’ll have to replay and refine your play. In the game you control a high-speed mech-suit that can enter an “echo state” that slows down time, enabling you to defeat enemies, pull off new routes or trigger a bust of speed. You’ll be able to take on these test courses when Echobreaker launches on PC via Steam on August 6th.

Cult of PIN by KennyMakesGames – August 10th, 2026 – PC

Pinball games are a not-so-guilty pleasure of mine, so when I saw Cult of Pin from KennyMakesGames, I was immediately intrigued. A pinball roguelike played on cursed eldritch tables, the game features more than 100 modifiers or upgrades that allow you to turn the game of pinball on its head. I imagine the leader boards are going to be incredibly competitive on a game like this, where no two runs are the same and you might stumble upon a game-breaking combination that’ll help you destroy the bumpers and rack up a high score. Check Cult of Pin out on PC via Steam on August 10th.

Echoes of Mystralia by Borealys Games – August 11th, 2026 – PC

We’re huge fans of Mages of Mystralia here at Finger Guns, so the news that there was a follow up on the way had us incredibly excited. This next title in Mystralia dials up the action, going for more of an ARPG vibe that its predecessor. What’s most pleasing however is that it still looks as though it is keeping the strongest elements of Mages of Mystralia within its DNA; you’ll still be able to create your own spells and it still looks as through there’s a strong narrative thread running through it. Echoes of Mystralia launches on August 11th on PC via Steam.

Ledgerbound by OmniMegaSuperCorp – August 11th, 2026 – PC

“Okay, but what if Bravely Default was actually really funny?” seems to be the brief that developers OmniMegaSuperCorp were working with when developing Ledgerbound. A story heavy strategy game, this title puts you in the shoes of an insurance adjuster in a fantasy realm. When the world, but more importantly your employment, is threatened, you set off an a HR approved quest to stop it, keep your job, completed in triplicate according to the SOP, or something like that. There’s laughs. There’s love. There’s talking cat people you can laugh with and…love. What more could you ask for? Ledgerbound launches on PC via Steam on August 11th.

Pro Jank Footy by Powerbomb Games – August 13th, 2026 – PC & Consoles

Just watch the trailer. No, seriously. Just watch it. No words I could write here could describe the vibe of Pro Jank Footy. An over-the-top arcade comedy-sports game arcade, Pro Jank promises absurd action, ever changing matches and a retro appeal. With local multiplayer, this looks like it could be the next big party game, but the game also comes with online play and a solo campaign too. Pro Jank Footy hits all the platforms on August 12th, 2026.

Duskfade by Weird Beluga – August 13th, 2026 – PC & Consoles

“Fine”, I imagine the meeting at developers Weird Beluga went, “If Square Enix won’t make more Kingdom Hearts, we’ll do it ourselves”. Sure, there’s no Mickey Mouse here, but Duskfade certainly looks like it’s emulating (and maybe even improving upon) the other staples of that series. In the game, you play as Zirian who, accompanied by a mechanical Cuckoo, sets out to save his sister from a mysterious Clock Tower. Hopefully, unlike Kingdom Hearts, the plot makes sense in Duskfade when it releases on PC and consoles on August 13th.

Rivage by Exnilo Studio – August 13th, 2026 – PC & Console

A few years ago, we had a slew of these narrative-heavy sci-fi puzzles games set aboard abandoned space stations and I got a real taste for them. I’ll admit. I’ve missed them since, so I’m personally very ready to take on Rivage from Exnilo Studio. An immersive sci-fi puzzle adventure set aboard the A.R.E.S. space station, Rivage has you play as Miranda who wakes up on the station as it is being effected by some mysterious space mumbo-jumbo, and you’ve got to figure out what’s going on. Sign me up. Rivage looks great, and is releasing on August 12th (or maybe September, if the Steam page is to be believed) on PC and console.

Wild Blue Skies by Chuhai Labs – August 13th, 2026 – PC & Consoles

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Star Fox must feel very flattered by Wild Blue Skies. A love letter to the classic on-rails flight combat series, this indie game presents a colourful and fast paced alternative to the Nintendo franchise, complete with anime-inspired character art. While Wild Blue Skies promises to be easy to pick up, it will also reward those that spend the time to master its intricacies. Strap in for a nostalgic thrill ride when Wild Blue Skies hits PC and consoles on August 13th, 2026.

Static Dread The Submarine by Solarsuit Games – August 14th, 2026 – PC & Consoles

Static Dread The Lighthouse was a chillingly good time, and with the follow up The Submarine, the developers are dialing up the tension. Set aboard – you guessed it – a submarine, you play as the Captains right hand man who’s going to be helping the crew through their own madness as you navigate the eldritch horrors that await beneath the waves. The choices you make will have consequences, maybe costing you members of the crew or the last threads of your own sanity. We’ll be navigating these murky depths on August 14th when Static Dread The Submarine launches on PC and consoles.

Puppergeist by Serenity Forge – August 20th, 2026 – PC

I think the name “Puppergeist” meant that this indie game was going to make it to this list regardless of what the game looked like. It is a great name. Thankfully, this blend of rhythm game and virtual novel looks incredible. In the game you play as a witch who has traveled to the Doggie Underworld to recover her lost pupper. In order to find her lost doggo, she must meet and chat with canine spectors, then ease their troubles. Puppergeist is a cute looking game, but it has that “I’m probably going to make you cry” element that to it too. Have your tissues ready for August 20th, when Puppergeist launches on PC via Steam & EGS and Xbox.

Lost & Found: A This Bed We Made Story by Lowbirth Games – August 5th, 2026 – PC

This Bed We Made was superb. It’s with joy then that we can report that a standalone expansion of sorts is releasing in just a few short days. In this short narrative game, we catch Sophie Roy in her new job as a stewardess aboard a 1960’s passenger ship. When things start to go missing, she sets out to uncover the culprit. Lasting only a few hours, I imaging this will be a lovely little palette cleanser to play between big blockbuster games. While you don’t need to have played it to enjoy Lost & Found, we advise you go play This Bed We Made, and the dive into this expansion on August 5th, 2026 when it launches on PC via Steam.

T.W.I.R.L. by Genie Boy Games – August 10th, 2026 – PC

We’re heading into that part of the year where I start to keep my eye out for the scarier indie games on the market because… well…Halloween is coming up and I like to try and scare my own pants off. T.W.I.R.L. looks like it is going to fit that bill nicely. Inspired by PT but leaning into the PSX visual style, this game has set in the middle of the night in your childhood home. Everyone is asleep except for you, and as you explore, you’ll venture through a personal journey about “identity, self-hatred, and a dark secret you’ve kept since 9-years-old”. Sound intriguing? Check out T.W.I.R.L.’s Steam release on August 10th.

VHOLUME by IronEqual – August 21st, 2026 – PC

What happens when you mix Mirror’s Edge with brutalist architecture and a melancholy vibe? Well, you get Vholume, from developers Nathan Grange, Léonard Lemaitre and Niels Tiercelin. The trappings of Vholume set an oppressive setting; “In the derelict capital of Afro-Eurasia, ruled by an all-controlling Ministry, Robert embarks on a bureaucratic quest to restore his family’s revoked ration tickets”. The game play however looks like a juxtaposition to this somberness, offering freedom of completion with player-centric solutions where we’re free to utilise the momentum based traversal to solve levels how we see fit, either alone or with friends in multiplayer. Vholume dashes to Steam on August 21st.

Kill The Shadow by Shadowlight – August 5th, 2026 – PC

Firstly, Kill The Shadow is gorgeous. Utilising a stunning 2.5D pixel art style that blends 2D character models with high definition 3D environments, it looks fantastic. Secondly, this game sounds deeply intriguing. In the game you play as Lucas who’s trying to piece together the mysterious events that led to the fracturing of Dark Tide City a decade prior while solving bizarre crimes along the way. Kill The Shadow has a branching narrative which’ll react to your choices and the way you play the game. Finally, that titular Shadow? Well, it’s a mysterious being that’s also attached to Lucas’ back and helps him reads memories and reconstructs traces of the dead. We have so many questions that’ll we’ll get answered on August 5th when Kill The Shadow launches on Steam.

FEED IT by Games On A Chair – August 17th, 2026 – PC

Inspired by Mouth Washing, FEED IT is a messed up looking game that’s aiming to mess with you on August 17th. In this game, you’re trapped in a building with an abusive monster who’s demanding food. You have 3 choices – obey, find food and feed ‘it’, find food and eat it yourself to stay alive but face the consequences, or try to escape. This short form experience looks chilling, and comes with a multitude of content warnings. If you’ve got the stomach for it, wishlist Feed It on Steam.
