A demo that could very well be incredible.

Cast your mind back to May 2023 and the PlayStation State of Play on the 24th. One of the highlights was the high-octane brutal combat of Phantom Blade Zero from Beijing-based S-Game. Today the developers have dropped a new anime trailer (with some cracking gameplay at the end) and confirmed once again that a demo is due this year. Check it out below.

Getting some strong Vampire Hunter D vibes in there, along with a few clues about the game. Is that their phantom Blades they are burning before they then brandish their real swords? These two quite clearly know each other and the watercolour section is a flashback to their youth fighting with wooden swords, until it becomes the playing out of the fight we don’t see. They know how this will go down before they even begin. It’s some pretty intense stuff.

We are sorry to inform you that despite a very atmospheric anime trailer, there are no plans for an anime series at this time. But the good news is that the demo seems to be locked in. Considering this game is being championed by Sony, we hope to see more and more over the next year, and hopefully a release date soon. It also made our fabulous Seven Games From China Primed To Blow Up In the West list.

If you need a refresher, here’s the eye-watering trailer from May 2023’s Sony State of Play. Pick your jaw up off the floor.
