Final Black Myth Wukong Trailer Showcases Monkey’s 72 Transformations

Sound the drums of war because our Journey To The West is about to begin! Black Myth: Wukong is just 12 days away and has dropped yet another breathtaking trailer. Supposedly the final one. No stranger to creating buzz online, Game Science has managed something of a viral sensation with Black Myth: Wukong before it’s even been released. Check out the newest trailer below and feast your little monkey eyes on the vast swathes of lore, new locations, weapons and transformations on offer, then come back below for some analysis.

This final trailer really concentrates heavily on gameplay showcasing bosses, combat and the attacks at your command. However it’s the transformations that steal the show. Hitherto kept largely under wraps apart from the Cicada stealth section in an early trailer, it’s here, and in the recent previews, that details of Monkey’s transformations have finally come out.

In the book Journey to the West which Black Myth: Wukong is based on, Sun Wukong learns the ’72 transformations’ from his first monk teacher before he embarks on his quest. Game Science have incorporated this part of his supernatural oeuvre to great effect, crafting a mechanic where you absorb the spiritual form of enemies and bosses you defeat and are then able to transform into them for maximum damage in subsequent battles. Wukong absorbs the blue bald giant into his magical gourd at 2:27 and then turns into it mid-combo in the very next clip.

You can see plainly for the first time in this trailer, transformations into an invisible monk, a beetle head, tentacles, a wolfman, and plenty more besides, all coming with their own attacks and specials that change battle. It’s like Wukong’s own take on Souls-like builds and combat specials. There’s also much made of traversal-based transformations, or what looks like one-offs – the fox running through the snow, the blue bull, the cicada, and what even looks like the famous thousands of monkey clones made from Monkey’s hairs at 3:43.

To say we are hyped is the understatement of the year. Check back to Finger Guns this weekend for our look at Journey To The West in a little more detail.

Black Myth: Wukong is set to launch worldwide on 20th August 2024, for PC and PlayStation 5.
