16 Indie Games To Be Excited About During September 2024

Hello everyone, full disclosure for this month’s list of indie games, I am away as of the posting of this article visiting family. That means everything on this list has been well prepared to provide a date for their game. Sometimes that’s not the case until the very last day of the month. If there are any I’ve missed, I’ll put them in Octobers!

August saw some incredible releases and the team here at Finger Guns managed to cover a bunch. From the emotional journey on all fours with Farewell North to the furry-ous and ultra-violent Gori: Cuddly Carnage, and even more anthropomorphic adventures in Crypt Custodian; August was like a zoo of domesticated pets gone walkies.

Looking ahead, September has some long-awaited indie heavy-hitters as well as some lo-fi surprises that look to alter your brain chemistry. If that sounds like a good time, then I’ve got a list of indie games to be excited about during September 2024.

Pneumata by Deadbolt Interactive – 3rd September 2024

One of my favourite games growing up and probably my first dip into survival horror was Condemned 2: Bloodshot – a survival horror that leant into FPS mechanics just enough to feel like the best of both worlds. Fast forward to now and we’ve got what I feel could be a true spiritual successor with Pneumata. The developers are making bold claims that it’ll be the scariest psychological horror in years, so of course we’re going to have to put Rossko to the test, right? The plot description is light but apparently, you’ll be questioning what reality is as you scavenge for weapons, investigate crime scenes and explore an apartment building that is more hell than your Uni accommodation – let’s hope the tenants aren’t funny about all the blood splatters. Pneumata will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Garbanzo Quest by Zachary Gardner – 4th September 2024

Described as a bullet-heck platformer and created by a single developer, Garbanzo Quest looks to be a strange but challenging time. Much like Pizza Tower, Garbanzo Quest looks like a wild ride from start to finish. Your weapon of choice is your own spit as you patooie your foes to help rescue your friends across the world of FREEDOMLAND – it’s all caps so you know they really mean it. You’ll be navigating handcrafted retro-inspired levels by yourself or with a buddy in split-screen co-op. Collect badges that give you new powers, find hats to customise yourself and above all else, spit on that thang! Garbanzo Quest will release on PC for Steam and itch.io.

Elsie by Knight Shift Games – 10th September 2024

Elsie is a vibrant but deadly action roguelike where death is only the beginning. Set in the technicolour world of Ekis, technology and natural resources were harmonious thanks to the Guardians. However, since their disappearance, the world has been stuped in chaos with only one last shot at salvation, Elsie. Elsie is an android set out to find the Guardians and save the world as she navigates the dangers, finding new powers and blasting bots to bits. With a full voice cast featuring familiar faces, stellar visuals and hyperkinetic gameplay, Elsie looks to be a roguelike riot. The game will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Hollowbody by Headware Games – 12th September 2024

After Headware Games’ last title, Chasing Static, I was immediately invested in what the solo developer had coming next. With Chasing Static being a love letter to atmospheric horrors from the PSX era, Hollowbody takes a generational leap into PS2-inspired horrors like Silent Hill 2&3. Described as a tech noir survival horror, you play as Mica, an unlicensed black market shipper whose crash-landed into an exclusion zone whilst looking for her partner. Now she has to manage what resources she has left, push through the decaying British town and solve environmental puzzles to get out. She’s not alone though as deadly remnants of the zone lurk in the dilapidated area. Hollowbody will release on PC.

Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines by Medallion Games – 12th September 2024

What’s better than one dog with a grapple? That’s right! Two dogs with grapples as Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines introduces double of both! Pablo will now have to team up with Luna in all-new dimensions to save the cosmos in their own ways. Much like the first game, the sequel has even more fast-paced 2D platforming, with new fresh abilities to have fun with. Execute the levels with either the newcomer anti-hero Luna, whose shoot-first ask-questions-later attitude will get down to business, or Pablo’s trusty grappling platforming as you switch between the two. Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines will release on Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Wild Bastards by Blue Manchu – 12th September 2024

From the team that brought players Void Bastards is the whole new intergalactic adventure, Wild Bastards. The game is a roguelike strategy FPS that sees your team of Outlaws looting and shooting from planet to planet. Play between 13 distinct characters with their own weaponry, skill tree and special abilities as you gun sling in bite-sized tactical shootouts. Plan your journey with strategy as you bag as much swag during your incursions. Manage your mods for each character, assemble your crew and complete a campaign as you make a name for yourself across the galaxy. Wild Bastards will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Caravan SandWitch by Studio Plane Toast – 12 September 2024

Sable and Jusant have an explorative cadence that I can’t seem to ever get enough of, and Caravan SandWitch looks like it could also do just that. The game is a narrative-driven adventure that sees you uncovering the mystery behind your missing sister in a sci-fi-infused world. You’ll visit landscapes in your van that show the good and bad effects society has had on the planes of Cigalo. You’ll also be able to upgrade your trusty caravan with new tech to help guide you through the many ruins you’ll encounter. Talk to the locals, discover new paths and hopefully find your sister in this somehow cosy post-apocalypse. Caravan SandWitch will release on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Phoenix Springs by Calligram Studio – 16th September 2024

Phoenix Springs’s art direction immediately caught my eye when I originally saw it during the Future of Play Direct. It felt like a Ladybird book’s artwork had leapt out of the pages and inhabited an illusive neo-noir world. The game is a point-and-click mysterious adventure that sees you playing as reporter Iris Dormer reconnecting with her estranged brother. This reconnection brings her to Phoenix Springs, a desert oasis with a community equally as enigmatic as its setting. Investigating the ruins, talking to the locals and uncovering mysteries will connect the place, the myth and herself. Phoenix Springs will release on PC.

The Plucky Squire by All Possible Futures – 17th September 2024

The Plucky Squire is a riveting debut from All Possible Futures, as the devs take their previous experience working on games like The Sword of Ditto and Pokémon, to create a genre-fusing action adventure that literally jumps right out of the page. The game follows Jot and his friends – storybook characters who have discovered a world outside of the pages they existed on.

After the evil Humpgrump comes to realise he’s destined to lose in this fairytale in perpetuity, he kicks the band of heroes out of the pages so he can rewrite his ending. Your task is to stop the story from being rewritten as you cross 3D and 2D levels to save the day. The art style is fantastic, the blend of different types of gameplay is inspiring and we cannot wait to play it. The Plucky Squire will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Marko: Beyond Brave by Studio Mechka – 17th September 2024

Inspired by Slavic myth and legends, Marko: Beyond Brave is an action-packed Metroidvania with a sweet 2D hand drawn art style. You play as the titular Marko as he takes on the dark forces of Entropy, who threatens to engulf the world. Wage war with mythical creatures, make unlikely alliances and restore the balance before Entropy takes everything. Featuring a tough but fair combat system that utilises dashing, dodging, slashing and shooting, your reflexes will be put to the test in epic boss fights. Explore the land of Zagora and discover new abilities to help you reach places you couldn’t before and uncover hidden treasures. Marko: Beyond Brave will release on PC.

Keylocker | Turn Based Cyberpunk Action by Moonana – 18th September 2024

A world without music would have its ups and downs: No Taylor Swift? Great, but never having a Brat summer would be a travesty or a second blessing depending on your absolutely wrong opinion. But a world without sound where music is outlawed is a universally morbid concept – cue Keylocker. In Keylocker you play as B0B0, a singer songwriter who wants to crush the 141-year law of no music. As a Doppelganger born to obey the law, she detests the notion and catches wind that there’s a robot with stellar drum skills.

B0B0 wants them to join her band so they can cripple the law, start a revolution and find the true essence of music – the Keylocker. The game is a turn-based RPG that uses real-time rhythm game mechanics in unique tandem to fight as a resistance. The game feels like a perfect example of cyberpunk fiction with some fun mechanics to keep it feeling modern whilst being inspired by classics like Chrono Trigger. Keylocker will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Frostpunk 2 by 11 Bit Studios – 20th September 2024

With the incredible success of Frostpunk, it only made sense for 11 Bit Studios to develop a sequel. Frostpunk 2 is a new city-survivor with deeper mechanics and even more macabre decision-making. You play as a Steward commanding the city through a never-ending winter, but not without the watchful eye of the Council Hall. With survival instincts and unwavering mettle to do what’s best for the last city on Earth being crucial, Frostpunk 2 offers a new multi-chapter saga with a Story Mode and a sandbox mode called Utopia. Featuring new factions with their own ideologies and colonies to reach out to, there are now even more ways to wrestle with the supply and demand of upkeeping a frostbitten city. Frostpunk 2 will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Tiny Glade by Pounce Light – 23rd September 2024

One of the best things about Sims was typing in ‘Motherlode’ and just having carte blanche on whatever kind of house you wanted to build. But Tiny Glade doesn’t want you to build a house but an entire kingdom instead. Free from combat, management or wrong decisions, Tiny Glade sets you up with a full tool kit to deck out your very own medieval abode. With a gridless building system that you can design by the brick, plank or even pebble, there really isn’t quite an ol’ time builder like it. A short and sweet game but one you could get lost in for hours, Tiny Glade will release on PC.

Zoochosis by Clapperheads – 23rd September 2024

Zoochosis is a bodycam horror that sees you having a very first bad day at the Zoo. You play as a Zookeeper who’s discovered some of the animals have become infected, mutating them into monstrosities with a taste for blood. This isn’t the end for you, however, as you can find a cure to help the ones that are infected. Care for different species by preparing meals, cleaning their enclosures and restocking supplies in an attempt to prevent infection. Explore the zoo and create a vaccine to hopefully save the animals, but which ones? Your choices will affect the ending, will you survive the night? Zoochosis will release on PC.

Shadows of Doubt by ColePowered Games – 26th September 2024

Shadows of Doubt has been in Steam Early Access for what has felt like a decent chunk of time. This is probably because as a procedurally generated immersive sim, there is an almost unquantifiable amount of variables going on when you’re playing. Made by a single dev, Shadows of Doubt is a detective game set in a hyper-industrialised alternate reality in the 80s. With sleuthing gadgets at your disposal and any direction to take them, you play your way and solve cases to make money. The city is brimming with citizens, all with their own jobs, daily routines and motivations. You can tail them, interrogate them and discover clues for your case. Featuring a voxel art style where you can explore every room in every building, Shadows of Doubt feels like you could do anything to your cold detective’s heart contents. The game will release on PlayStation 5 and PC.

Apartment Story by Blue Rider Interactive – 26th September 2024

Apartment Story is a dramatic third-person thriller that takes place all inside the apartment. You play as Arthur, somebody who’s just trying to get by in life as his old roommate Diane comes to visit. After some drinking and partying, a third friend, Blondey, arrives and the three must navigate the turmoil. A gun’s presence lingers amongst the three, will Arthur engage with his two friends and the gun? Or shut it all out completely. Featuring Sims-esque qualities to manage Arthur’s stats like health, hygiene and mental well-being, you can do an array of odd jobs to help them. Shave, smoke, write, sleep – every decision will result in how you overcome this predicament. Apartment Story will release on PC.
