When you think of Wales, you probably think of difficult to pronounce train stations, tasty lamb chops and green rolling hills. I mean, I do at least. You probably don’t think of faceless figures stalking you around a “I’m definitely leaving a bad review for this place on Trip Advisor” Hotel – But that’s exactly what Wales Interactive (the publisher behind The Complex, The Shapeshifting Detective, Late Shift and Don’t Knock Twice) are cooking up with ‘Maid of Sker’.
“Steeped in rich Welsh folklore, Maid of Sker draws players back to 1898 to adventure through the notoriously macabre Hotel Sker. With multiple ways for your stay at Hotel Sker to come to an end, use your time wisely as you navigate the halls and grounds employing no-weapon survival tactics, and relying on your ability to keep quiet to stay breathing.”
Terrifying. The good news? Maid of Sker is launching on PC via Steam, Xbox One and Playstation 4 in June 2020. A Nintendo Switch version of Maid of Sker will be arriving in October 2020. The release window annoucnement is accompanied by this new trailer which – warning – is cool but hella scary:
- 3D sound-based AI system as the core survival mechanic.
- A chilling story inspired by Welsh folklore fusing psychological, gothic and British horror.
- Realistic visuals featuring 4k uncapped on PC and enhancements on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
- Re-imagining of famous Welsh hymns Calon Lân (A Pure Heart), Suo-Gân (Welsh Lullaby) and Ar Hyd Y Nos (All Through the Night) from the spine-chilling voice of Tia Kalmaru.
“We’re so excited to be announcing Maid of Sker. For us at Wales Interactive Maid of Sker is a fantastic chance to share some Welsh heritage with the rest of the gaming world and frighten them all at the same time!”Wales Interactive Managing Director, David Banner
Our Take: Maid of Sker has previously made it onto a number of our “indie games to look out for” lists. It’s safe to say we’re excited about this one. It certainly looks innovative with the hold-your-breath mechanic and multiple paths of play. Tia Kalmaru has a fantastic voice and there’s writing talent behind this game, including credits on Don’t Knock Twice and SOMA.
