The name Franz Kafka will either mean something to you or it won’t. A celebrated 20th-Century Writer, Kafka’s novels and short stories like The Trial and The Castle have become deeply influential to many modern day fictions. He’s even got a term named after his writing – Kafkaesque – that seamlessly combine the real and the fantastic. Now Kafka’s writing has inspired another medium with ‘Metamorphosis’, a video game based on the story of the same name.
From Ovid Works and All In! Games, Metamorphosis is coming to PS4, PC via Steam, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch this summer.
In the original Metamorphosis story, a travelling salesman is transformed into a giant insect. The tale tells of how this change effects his family and his own mental state. In the game however, there seems to be a different transformation, shrinking to join the lands of the insects rather than changing into a human sized one. It’s an interesting twist which is far more accustomed to a video game adaption.
While the above trailer is purely CGI, it does give us a taste of what Metamorphosis will be like. Alongside the trailer, we’ve also received some screenshots which show the game itself is looking very interesting.
Metamorphosis lets players experience:
- A bug’s perspective in first person – see the world in a whole new way
- Challenging environmental puzzles – parkour, wall climb, search for clues, and overcome obstacles
- Unique movement mechanics – make full use of your tiny body and sticky limbs
- A story inspired by Kafka’s imagination – meet eccentric characters in a hand-painted world, as you journey through surrealist landscapes towards The Tower
“Play as Gregor, a man who has morphed into a tiny bug, and set out on an extraordinary journey to unravel the mystery of your transformation. Metamorphosis is a first person adventure based in a surrealist world where your newfound abilities are your last and only hope for redemption.”Press Release
