Marvel Heroes Omega – Which Founders Pack Is Right For You?

By

Doctor Doom and Loki are at it again in Marvel Heroes Omega – but which character do you bring to the fight? We go hands on with all of the Founder Pack’s to give you the lowdown;

Marvel Heroes Omega is an upcoming free-to-play online action game from developers Gazillion. In it you choose a hero, team up with other Marvel heroes from almost every major comic book series and battle it out against every villain you could care to mention. Imagine if someone took Marvel Ultimate Alliance, improved the combat and spliced it with an MMO and you’re almost there.

The full game is scheduled to launch into Open Beta on PlayStation 4 on May 23rd and June 20th on the Xbox One. The game is already available on PC (but called simply Marvel Heroes).

The PS4 version recently ended a pretty successful Closed Beta and is currently running a “Head Start” program ahead of release. This means that if you purchase one of the Marvel Heroes Omega Founders Packs, you can download the game and get a headstart on everyone else before it releases to the rest of the world on the 23rd.

We’ve got a full review in the works here at Finger Guns but we thought we’d share our impressions of the Founders Packs ahead of release just incase anyone wanted to take advantage of the “Head Start” program with us.

Firstly, Why would you want a Founders Pack aside from joining the “Head Start” Program?

Well, unlike a lot of free-to-play games, it’s not necessary to pay for a character. Marvel Heroes Omega does give you enough of the in-game currency after the tutorial section to buy one of the cheaper characters. If you wanted to, you could take this character through the entirety of the game’s 9 Chapter Story mode and beyond. You can also “try before you buy” on all of the available characters until you reach level 10 with them. In-game currency is gifted to you while playing and if you’re going to try to purchase a character you want to play as, it might take you a while – we’re talking 50+ hours of playtime for some fan favourites at the current rate of drops.

Alternatively, The Founders Packs give you instant access to characters and within them as well as some helpful items and some in-game currency (enough to buy another character in most instances too). Each Founder’s Pack offers something different and I’m going to describe what’s in them, with a price, links to the PSN store and some quick impressions of each character.

The Spider-Man Founder’s Pack

PSN Link: EU / US
Cost: £14.99 / $19.99

Contains:

  • Instant access to Spider-Man.
  • An alternative costumer based on the suit worn in Marvel’s Civil War.
  • An XP Boost which helps you level up quicker.
  • 500 G’s (one of the in-game currencies) which is enough to buy you access to another character or in game buffs.

Spider-Man is Rossko’s favourite character in Marvel Heroes Omega and after a quick play with him, it’s easy to see why. He’s quick with short to mid-range attacks and has a variety of impressive abilities – rapid fire web projectiles and slinging pieces of concept along the floor among them.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Founders Pack

PSN Link: EU / US
Cost: £29.99 / $39.99

Contains:

  • Instant access to both Star Lord and Rocket Raccoon (who comes complete with Groot).
  • Alternative costumes based on the Marvel Studios Movies (yes, that includes Baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2)
  • 5 XP Boosts to really get you levelling up quickly (As Rossko found out, these do stack up to +400% so you can get yourselves powered up very quickly).
  • 1000 G’s (one of the in-game currencies) which is enough to buy you one or two more characters or a number of in game buffs.

Rocket and Groot come as a team in Marvel Heroes Omega. You play as Rocket during normal play but can summon Groot using an ability and using the Movie related pack, you get a tiny Baby Groot to fight alongside you. Yes, this is as funny as it sounds.
Star Lord is a fun character to play as. Has a mix of close ranged and ranged attacks and has many hilarious interactions with other characters when he meets them on the field of battle.

The War Machine Founders Pack

PSN Link: EU / US
Cost: £13.99 / $16.99 (PS+ exclusive)

Contains:

  • Instant access to War Machine
  • A bonus costume based on the suit worn in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War
  • An XP Boost which helps you level up quicker.
  • 500 G’s (one of the in-game currencies) which is enough to buy you access to another character or in game buffs.

War Machine might feel like an odd choice for a starter but he’s an efficient character with all of his iconic weaponry from the movies and comics. Combining his ranged attacks make light work of most enemies and blasting people away with his chain gun never gets old.

The Deadpool Founders Pack

PSN Link: EU / US
Cost: £14.99 / $19.99

Contains:
(I’ve copied this from the PSN Store because I think it’s hilarious and I don’t think I could put it any better)

  • Instant Access to Deadpool: Wait… What!?! You can’t sell me. Well, you CAN, I suppose. But you shouldn’t. Not without a cut. Or in a freakin’ pack for goodness sake.
  • Deadpool Zen Costume: Clothes I wear… You guys seriously want this? I mean, I could just put on any clothes I want and -WHAM!- you’d want to purchase them… digitally?
  • XP Boost: This implies I need experience. That. Is. A. Lie.
  • 500 Gs: Wow. Presumably you need these so you can spend lavishly on me, outfitting me with YET MORE CLOTHES.

The X-Men Founder’s Pack

PSN Link: EU / US
Cost: £49.99 / $59.99

Contains:

  • Instant Access to Wolverine, Jean Grey, Storm, Iceman, Beast & Psylocke.
  • An additional costume for each character (Wolverine – Classic Brown. Jean Grey – New X-Men. Storm – Astonishing X-Men. Beast – Astonishing X-Men. Iceman – All New X-Men. Psylocke – Lady Mandarin)
  • 10 Combination boosts – these boosts increase the in-game currency drops, raise the XP earned and increase the number of S.H.I.E.L.D. supply drops (basically loot chests) you’ll find.
  • 2000 G’s (one of the in-game currencies) which is enough to buy you a number of characters and in game items.

Now, when I first saw this price I thought to myself “Wow. That’s a lot to ask for 6 character” but if you think you’re going to enjoy this game, this might be worth the investment. Some of the other packs contain 1 character and cost £13.99. This pack contains 6 characters and, at the same rate as the other Founders Packs should cost £84. Plus, this Founder’s Pack comes with “Combination boosts” rather than just XP boosts (which are found in the majority of the other packs) that increase currency and loot drops as well as XP.
As for the characters, Wolverine is – as you would expect – vicious with his melee attacks and is hard to kill. Jean Grey has a good mix of mid-ranged and close attacks. Storm, Beast and Iceman are all adequate but it’s Psylocke that really shines here. She’s a real joy to play with – especially wearing the Lady Mandarin outfit.

The Avengers Founders Pack

PSN Link: EU / US
Cost: £49.99

Contains:

  • Instant Access to Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Thor.
  • Additional costumes for all 6 characters based on the outfits worn in the Avengers: Age of Ultron film.

As with the X-Men pack, this might seem like a hefty price tag but it does work out to be cheaper than buying the characters separately. The difference here is that you get to play as almost all of these characters in the tutorial section which means you get a feel for these characters before any others. Captain America has his iconic shield bouncing technique. Iron Man has his repulsor blasters. Black Widow’s wrist shockers are ranged here so she makes a good support character. Hulk is a fantastic character to play as but not so great to play alongside – he is such a massive character and has some impressive mid-range attacks that don’t leave many enemies alive for anyone else to fight. This, for me, is the best pack out of the lot because there’s a real variety of characters that offer replay value and with those Combination boosts, you’ll be a force to be reckoned with in no time.

Lastly, and this is only for the most hard-core players, there’s Iron Fist and the Black Symbiote Spider-Man. These characters are a timed exclusive for those that pay for the Deadpool, X-Men, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and Spider-Man Founder packs (you don’t need the War Machine pack to unlock these characters). That means that if you spend the full £159 on the other Founders Packs, you’ll get Symbiote Spider-Man and Iron Fist before anyone else. That might not seem like much of an incentive but both characters are pretty cool and there are people out there that love these unlockables – this if for you.

So, which Founder Pack is for you? We’ll so far, I’ve not played as a character I’ve not enjoyed and I’ve played as all of these for at least a few levels and I’ve played as a number of characters not in these packs too. I think one of the great aspects of Marvel Heroes Omega is that regardless of which character you choose, you can have a good time with them – whether that be your free Character or one from the Founder’s Packs. It’s all down to personal preference and if you desperately want to play through this game (which has as much content as AAA console release) as your favourite Marvel Character, you can do so for as little as £13.99. For the collectors out there, the Founders Pack offer a hefty discount on the characters and offer XP or Combination boosters to get you rolling early on.

If you’re joining us on Marvel Heroes Omega, let us know which Founder’s Pack or character you choose in the comments below and let us (and everyone else) how you’re getting on with them. See you in Avengers Tower.
