What’s next for Agent Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? We make some educated guesses on what storylines to expect in Season 5.

Spoilers for Season 4 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ahead.

Season 4 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has just finished showing in the US and Marvel Television and ABC dropped the news we had been waiting for – There will be a 5th Season. (Cue huge sigh of relief).

The 4th season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tried something a little different – it split itself into 3 distinctive parts (referred to as pods) – and it was a revelation. Dedicating a third of the series to Ghost Rider, LMD (or life model decoys) and “Agents of Hydra” while having the threads of each story play out under the main arc worked incredibly well. Having being a successful experiment, I can imagine this is something we’ll see more of in Season 5.

When we last see them, Agent Coulson (who now owes Ghost Rider some kind of debt) and and the rest of his team have been captured by heavily armed guards and, after the stinger, have been transported to space. This is a similar trick that the show used between seasons 3 and 4, having a space in time between the 2 seasons in which events have transpired that we never get see on screen. So what are Coulson and the gang doing in space? Who were the team of guards that took them away? What’s going to happen next? We’ll, we have made some educated guesses.

Agents of S.W.O.R.D.

As the Marvel movie slate continues to expand into the stars with Thor: Ragnarok, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Captain Marvel, it would make sense to expand the remit of the TV shows to include more alien content too. One way to do that would be to introduce S.W.O.R.D.. For those who don’t know what S.W.O.R.D. (or Sentient World Observation and Response Department) is, it’s a space based version of S.H.I.E.L.D. that specializes in extraterrestrial threats. What makes me think that S.W.O.R.D. are about to get introduced to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D? Well, one of the members of SWORD is Carol Danvers, the same Carol Danvers that is set to star in her own movie in November, 2018. The SWORD base of operations, called the Peak, is also an orbital space station which might account for how Phil Coulson was able to look out of his bedroom window and see nothing but stars.
