The Full Virtual Not-E3 Conference List

With E3 cancelled this year, a tonne of smaller virtual events have popped up to bring us the gaming news without risking the 'rona. Here they all are.

Whether you loved it or hated it, E3 is (was?) a cultural landmark for gamers. For the first time since it started in 1995, the trade show and gaming extravaganza is skipping a year so there’ll be no E3 in 2020 because of COVID-19.

The lack of a centralised place for everyone to travel too to show their games has opened up something of a vacuum for coverage but also an opportunity for developers and publishers to reach a wider audience by presenting their goods online at virtual conferences.

And ho boy are people jumping at this opportunity. The next 4 months are filled with mini-E3 spinoff’s ranging from indie-focused presentations, Japanese only studios and even a Wholesome Game Conference. To help you keep up, we’ve made a list of them. We’re so good to you. Make sure you head through this list, follow or subscribe where you can and get those notifications turned on so you don’t miss anything. Make sure to bookmark this page too and watch along with us.

Wholesome Direct – May 26th 18:00 BST / 13:00 ET

Brought to you by your friendly neighbourhood WholesomeGames, the Wholesome Games Direct is a cozy presentation supporting those indie games that are zen, cute, chill or simply gorgeous. There’s going to be exclusive footage, developer interviews, and announcements from over 50 wholesome indie games including Ooblets, Spiritfarer, SkateBIRD, Little Witch in the Woods, Garden Story, Chicory and Rainy Season. Cool.

State of Play – The Last of Us Part 2 – May 27th 21:00 BST / 16:00 ET

After debuting a new style of State of Play dedicated to Ghost of Tsushima, it’s now The Last of Us Part 2’s turn. A 25 minute deep dive into the gameplay experience and story of Naughty Dog’s latest and potentially greatest, we’ll be guided by Director Neil Druckmann through some never before seen footage.

The Outriders Broadcast – May 28th 17:00 BST / 12:00 ET

On the road to the release of Square Enix’s next-gen RPG shooter Outriders we’ll be getting a number of deep dives into the game features. The first broadcast set for May 28th will include brand-new gameplay, new areas, never before seen powers, character class deep dives, development updates straight from the team, and more. Sub here and make sure to turn on notifications to make sure you don’t miss it.

PlayStation 5 Showcase – June 11th 9PM BST

It’s finally happening. We Spoke too soon. This event has been postponed until a later date. After showing off the Dualsense controller and lulling us to sleep with technical specs delivered in a tone that could only be described as a lullaby, Sony are finally giving up the goods. Or at least some goods. As part of a series of showcases Sony have planned, this first on June 4th is apparently going to focus on games from “both larger and smaller, those newer and those more established” studios. It’s likely to be “games, games, games” and we’re probably not going to get a price and we might not even see the PS5 itself.

Night City Wire (Cyberpunk 2077) – June 25th TBC BST / TBC BST

We don’t know much about Night City Wire aside from the date which was revealed in the above trailer. Both Greg and I have had a preview of Cyberpunk 2077 however and it looks incredibly promising. What ever this is – we’re excited.

EA Play 2020 – June 18th 00:00 BST / June 11th 19:00 ET

EA’s annual presentation’s are divisive to say the least. If you like your sports games, they’re usually quite informative. If you rather shut your hand in a car door that listen to a footballer plug FIFA, these conferences can be tedious. I think it’s a guarentee we’ll see the confirmation of FIFA 21, Madden. NHL 21, NBA Live 21 and maybe something to do with UFC. We also know that EA, the publisher currently signed by Disney to develop Star Wars games, have more titles scheduled in a galaxy far, far away. It was a passing comment that confirmed the existence of Jedi: Fallen Order at an EA Play key note presentation so there’s every chance we might hear more about Star Wars this year. Could 2020 be the year EA bring back Fight Night? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

1st Day of the Devs – June 22nd 16:00 BST / 11:00 ET

The Day of the Devs Summer Game Fest 2020 Developer Showcase will be a 2 day presentation showing off the best that indie gaming has to offer. Some of the studios that have already announced their involvement in this are Akupara Games, Annapurna Interactive, The Behemoth, Finji, Kowloon Nights, Longhand Electric, MWM Interactive, Panic, Sabotage Studio, Skybound Games, Team17, thatgamecompany, Tribute Games and ustwo games. A world class assortment of studios that’ll likely lead to some very exciting announcements.

We’ll embed the video here once it’s available here but in the meantime, head over and sub here with those bells turned on: https://www.youtube.com/thegameawards

New Game+ Expo – June 23rd 17:00 BST / 12:00 ET

An impressive collection of boutique and smaller publishers have teamed together to bring the New Game+ Expo 2020 to us via Twitch. Those involved include Acttil, AKSYS Games, Arc System Works America, GungHo America ,Idea Factory International, Inti Creates, KOEI TECMO America, Natsume Inc., NIS America, Inc., PLAYISM, Sega of America, SNK Corporation, Spike Chunsoft and WayForward. Expect announcements, new trailers, updates and a “showcase of new and upcoming releases from a coalition of developers from around the world”.

BitSummit Gaiden – June 27th to 28th TBC BST / TBC ET

Since 2012, BitSummit has been a bastion for Japanese indie games each year. From 200 people in 2013 to 11k people in 2018, the indie gaming festival has attracted developers from all over the globe. When COVID-19 cancelled BitSummit 8 – The “8 bit”Summit – the organisers JIGA have been seeing how they could still present something. That event is called BitSummit Gaiden. Between June 27th and 28th a selection of more than 75 games from Japan and around the globe will be showcased on the BitSummit Discord server and on the  BitSummit Twitch channel.

BitSummit Gaiden has partnered with Utomik to make a selection of BitSummit Gaiden titles available on their platform for free from June 26 – July 11th too.

NACON Digital Showcase – July 7th 18:00 BST

The French publisher NACON is to hold it’s first ever digital conference joining the dozen others doing so in lieu of E3. On the 7th of July at 6PM BST / 7PM CEST / 10AM PT, the publisher’s youtube channel will “feature a wide range of announcements, gameplay video presentations and a few surprises”.

Tennocon 2020 – July 11th TBC BST / TBC ET

Warframe is a damn fine game and we’ll be finding out what’s next for the MMO at Tennoncon 2020 which will be digital only this year. You can still get your merch from the website but this year all the festivities will be beamed to your computer rather than delivered in person.

As soon as the channel details and start times are posted, we’ll update this section right here.

Ubisoft Forward – July 12th 20:00 BST / 15:00 ET

One of the publishers who has probably been detrimented the most by the E3 cancellation is Ubisoft. Their press conferences are always a highlight of the weekend and a large number of their annual announcements are made during E3. Their replacement digital conference is called Ubisoft Forward and it’s happening on July 12th.

What can we expect? Assassin’s Creed Valhalla for sure. WatchUnderscoreDogs Legion most likely. Rainbow Six Quarantine is also a shoe in. Gods and Monsters and maybe Beyond Good & Evil 2. Skull and Bones probably won’t get a showing after being pushed back to the 2021/22 release window. Could we see Splinter Cell? One can hope…

2nd Day of the Devs – July 20th TBC BST / TBC ET

Day of the Devs is so big this year that it has been given a second day. Double Fine and iam8bit will be presenting a second day of announcements from their indie friends and family.

We’ll embed the video here once it’s available here but in the meantime, head over and sub here with those bells turned on: https://www.youtube.com/thegameawards

Gamescom: Opening Night Live – August 24th TBC BST / TBC BST

At last year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live, Big Geoff K announced some games and then invited Kojima-san on stage to wax lyrical about Death Stranding for 15 minuets. Despite the German consumer show getting cancelled because of the damned COVID-19, the initial Opening Night show will still go ahead with a theme – “The Heart of Gaming”. This will be followed by several days of streaming focusing on the games that would have been at Gamescom. On the 28th, there will be a daily show showing partner content. On the 29th, there’s a show called “Awesome Indies” alongside another daily show of content from partners. Finally, on the 30th, the whole weekend will be topped off by the traditional Best of Show awards.

We’ll embed the video channel here when it has been announced.
