If you’re reading this, you’ll probably know me best for my games writing but when I’m not writing about Fortnite I’m a heart failure analyst at the Royal Stoke University hospital. Just over 6 months ago, I attended a conference on domestic abuse. Working with some NHS nurses, I was to attend the event and feed back on how we could improve our service. I left the event a changed man. I’d always suspected Domestic Abuse was an under reported issue in the UK but some of the figures blew me away. 1.9 million adults aged 16 to 59 years experienced domestic abuse in the last year in the UK alone. 32% of all violent crime reported to the police is related to domestic violence. This is not to mention the number of truly harrowing and emotionally impactful stories that were shared on the day. I’m not ashamed to say I was brought to tears a number of times on that day.
There was one statistic from the event that was heartening – There are more than 300 services around the country offering refuge and support to suffers of domestic abuse. One of those charities is a wonderful geoup called Arch. Their North Staffs branch was on hand to talk at the event and there was a queue of women wanting to thank the charity for everything they had done for them. This charity helps women and children (and sometimes men) fleeing domestic violence to get back on their feet with shelter, toys for children and support to find their independence. What they offer is incredible and they have a profound effect on the local area in Stoke on Trent.
So, I decided I wanted to give something back. On the 20th of July (this Friday) I’ll be putting to good use the only skill I have – gaming – for a 24 hour Nonviolent gaming stream to raise awareness and to raise funds for Arch North Staffs.
I set a funding goal of £200 and we’ve already hit that with a week to go but I want to utterly smash that target.
If you want to give to this amazing charity here’s the link to the JustGiving page.
Alternatively, you can text OMAC47 and a number of pounds to 70070 to donate via mobile which will be added to your next bill.
